We'll discuss treatment options appropriate to the extent and stability of your specific pattern.
What Is It?
Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system targets and destroys melanocytes, the cells responsible for skin pigment, causing well-defined patches of depigmented skin. It can occur anywhere on the body and its course is genuinely variable — some people have a few small, stable patches for years, while others experience more extensive or actively spreading involvement.
There is currently no guaranteed cure, but treatment can meaningfully restore pigment in many cases, particularly with early and consistent treatment. Response varies by body area — the face generally responds best, hands and feet the least reliably — which is discussed honestly at evaluation rather than promised as a uniform outcome.
Risk Factors
- Personal or family history of vitiligo or other autoimmune conditions
- No identifiable trigger in many cases
Symptoms
- Well-defined patches of depigmented (white) skin
- Can appear anywhere on the body, including around the eyes and mouth
- Course varies -- some patients have stable, limited patches; others experience progression
Treatment
- Topical Therapy: Most effective for limited, stable disease, particularly on the face.
- Phototherapy: Often more effective for more extensive vitiligo, considered based on extent of involvement.
- Cosmetic Camouflage: Available for patients who want it, as a complement to medical treatment.
