What Is It?
Viral warts are caused by a viral infection of the skin and are contagious, spreading through direct contact or shared surfaces. They can appear anywhere on the body but are especially common on the hands and feet, sometimes clustering together over time if untreated.
Cryotherapy — freezing the wart with liquid nitrogen — is the standard first-line treatment, typically requiring a few sessions spaced a few weeks apart depending on size and location. Warts that don’t respond adequately to cryotherapy can be managed with alternative removal approaches discussed at your evaluation.
Risk Factors
- Direct skin contact with an infected person or surface
- Minor breaks in the skin, which make infection easier
- Weakened immune response, in some cases
Symptoms
- Rough-textured, raised growths, often on hands or feet
- Can occasionally appear in clusters
- Generally painless unless located on a pressure-bearing area like the sole of the foot
Treatment
