What Is It?
Plaque psoriasis is the most common form of psoriasis, a chronic autoimmune condition that causes skin cells to build up rapidly, forming thick, red, scaly patches most often seen on the elbows, knees, and lower back. It is not contagious, a persistent and unfortunate misconception that can affect how patients are treated socially.
As a chronic, relapsing-remitting condition, plaque psoriasis is managed with a long-term, sustained treatment plan rather than positioned around a single permanent cure, with topical therapy, phototherapy, or systemic treatment considered based on extent and severity.
Risk Factors
- Family history of psoriasis
- Stress, infection, certain medications as trigger factors
- Smoking and obesity as contributing factors
Symptoms
- Well-defined red patches with silvery-white scale
- Commonly on elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back
- Itching or discomfort at affected sites
Treatment
- Topical Therapy: Effective as the primary treatment for limited, mild-to-moderate disease.
- Phototherapy: A well-established option for more extensive psoriasis.
