An inflammatory scalp condition often behind dandruff that doesn't respond to standard anti-dandruff shampoos.
Book a Scalp EvaluationFlaking with redness or a greasy scale?
This pattern points toward seborrheic dermatitis rather than simple dry scalp -- an evaluation confirms the diagnosis.
Dandruff shampoos not clearing it up?
Persistent flaking despite standard products often means seborrheic dermatitis needs a more targeted anti-inflammatory approach.
What Is It?
Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammatory skin condition affecting oil-producing areas of the body, with the scalp being one of the most commonly affected sites. It’s driven partly by an overgrowth of Malassezia yeast, naturally present on the skin, and presents with redness, greasy yellowish scale, and itching — distinct from the drier, finer flaking of simple dandruff or dry scalp.
Because standard anti-dandruff shampoo alone often isn’t enough to control seborrheic dermatitis, treatment typically combines a medicated shampoo, used at the correct frequency and contact time, with a targeted topical anti-inflammatory treatment to address the underlying inflammation directly.
Risk Factors
- Malassezia yeast overgrowth on the scalp
- Can also affect eyebrows, sides of the nose, and chest
- May flare with stress or seasonal changes
Symptoms
- Redness and greasy, yellowish scale
- Itching, sometimes significant
- Flaking that persists despite standard anti-dandruff shampoo
Treatment
- Targeted Topical Anti-Inflammatory Treatment: Treatment addressing the inflammation directly, rather than relying on anti-dandruff shampoo alone.
- Medicated Shampoo Protocols: Correct use -- frequency and contact time -- of medicated shampoo as part of a combined regimen.
